No High-Level Inquiry Ordered as Tripura Cabinet Declares One-Day State Mourning After DGP Anurag Dhankar's Death, National Flag to Fly at Half-Mast

The Tripura State Cabinet on Monday announced a one-day State Mourning on July 21, 2026, following the suicide of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, IPS, but did not announce any high-level inquiry into the incident during its meeting.

The decision was conveyed through an official notification issued by the Information and Cultural Affairs Department after the Cabinet expressed profound grief over the demise of the state's top police officer.

As a mark of respect, the Cabinet observed two minutes of silence in memory of the late DGP before commencing its meeting. The government described Anurag Dhankar as a dedicated, efficient and courageous police officer whose long and distinguished career was marked by professionalism, integrity and unwavering commitment to public service.

A 1994-batch IPS officer of the Tripura cadre, Dhankar joined the state in 1995 and served in several important positions before assuming the office of Director General of Police. During his career, he also represented India in the United Nations Mission in Kosovo and held key assignments with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). His exemplary service earned him the President's Police Medal for Meritorious Service along with other distinguished honours.

In its condolence message, the State Cabinet said Tripura has lost a devoted police officer, an able administrator and a remarkable leader whose contributions to policing and public service will remain an inspiration. The government also expressed its deepest sympathies to the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul.

As part of the State Mourning, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast on all government buildings across Tripura on July 21, 2026, where it is regularly hoisted. The government has also announced that no official government entertainment or ceremonial programmes will be held throughout the day as a mark of respect to the late DGP.

However, the Cabinet's official statement made no mention of constituting any high-level inquiry or special investigation into the circumstances surrounding the DGP's death.
