High Court commutes sentences on 9 Bangladeshi infiltrators, directs government to ensure early push-back

In a landmark judgment pronounced yesterday the single bench of high court of Tripura presided over by justice T.Amarnath Gour communted the sentences passed on 9 Bangladeshi infiltrators to periods of imprisonment already served by them and directed the state government to expedite the process of their push-back at the earliest. The court also ordered that from now on the 9 infiltrators will be in safe custody rather than on rigorous imprisonment and they shall be pushed back at the earliest after completion of all formalities.

Sources from high court said that over the past few months altogether 9 Bangladeshi infiltrators including women had been nabbed by police and produced in magistrate courts in Dhalai and Unakoti districts . One among the 9 infiltrators had also been found involved in criminal activities and the courts had pronounced them guilty under foreigners act and passport act and sentenced them to long years of rigorous imprisonment. An appeal against the orders had been filed in the high court and the case was heard yesterday.

In the course of hearing the government-appointed public prosecutor Raju Datta agreed with the plea made by the lawyer representing the infiltrators and said that in such cases it is better to arrange for their early push-back in stead of having them here in prison at the cost of the tax-payers money . He added that the state government will have no objection to the process of push-back, if ordered by the court. Hearing out all sides, justice T.Amarnath Gour commuted the sentences passed on the nabbed infiltrators, limiting it to the period of imprisonment already served and sent them to safe custody. He also directed the state government to make earliest possible arrangements to ensure their push-back to Bangladesh. The order passed by Justice T.Amarnath Gour has been hailed by all as a humanitarian and progressive judgment.
