The refusal of a section of corrupt police personnel even to register complaint of common people has always been a normal affair in Tripura, specially when the complainants do not enjoy any political backing or support. But things degenerated to disgraceful level yesterday when a notorious ASI of Melaghar police station Bishwajit Bhowmik grossly mistreated a helpless and tortured house-wife who had gone to file a legitimate complaint against the illegal bigamy of her miscreant husband . The hapless house-wife, a mother of two minor children, later appealed to the chief minister Dr Manik Saha to save her life while speaking to media persons outside the Melaghar police station.

According to details of the case available from Melaghar, Babita Debnath (35) of south Charilam Krishna Sangha area , had been married to a miscreant Vikash Debnath (38) of Uttar Laxmandhepa area eighteen years ago in 2008. But after six months of marriage Vikash Debnath, a notorious drunkard and gambler, started physically torturing her every night to force her to bring money from her parents. On many occasions Babita had indeed brought small amounts of money but Vikash’s greed and pressure for money grew sharply and on one occasion he tried to burn Babita alive by pouring kerosene on her body . On another occasion he tried to kill his own daughter by pressing a pillow on her face but Babita managed to save the life of her daughter. Around two years ago in 2024 Babita was forced to leave her miscreant husband’s home and go back to her parental home in south Charilam. With great difficulty she has been maintaining herself and her children by working as a ‘Bidi’ worker but her problems worsened as miscreant Vikash held back her Áadhar card and those of her children and refused to give these documents needed for admission of children to school.

Recently, Babita heard that her miscreant husband Vikash had married for the second time without obtaining statutory divorce from her. She, along with her relatives, reached Melaghar police station to file a complaint against her husband but the corrupt policemen of Melaghar refused to register her complaint and , in stead, mistreated her verbally. In this regard the ASI of Melaghar police station Biswajit Bhowmik took the lead and practically drove her away by heaping abuses on Babita. Completely broken by the ill treatment and refusal to give justice Babita shed tears and appealed to the chief minister Dr Manik Saha to give justice to her, while speaking to media persons outside the Melagahr police station.
