A 21-year-old college student was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a rented room in Agartala's AD Nagar area on Sunday, triggering widespread concern and prompting a police investigation.

According to preliminary reports, the deceased has been identified as Ashmita Reang, a resident of Khedachara village under Damchhara. She was a second-year student of Women's College, Agartala.

Police said the incident came to light after Ashmita's body was recovered from a rented room near the TV Tower in AD Nagar. The room was reportedly occupied by her boyfriend, Jemi Halam, who is said to be an MBB College student and a resident of Norvai Para in Ambassa.

Following the incident, AD Nagar Police detained Jemi Halam for questioning. Investigators are trying to determine the circumstances that led to the student's death and whether any criminal offence was involved.

The owner of the rented house, Manik Bhowmik, reportedly told police that Jemi had been staying in the rented accommodation for nearly two years. According to him, Ashmita had started visiting the room regularly over the past few months and had also been staying there at times.

Police have sent the body for a post-mortem examination, and the report is expected to play a crucial role in establishing the exact cause of death.
