A special court in West Tripura on Saturday sentenced a man to eight years' rigorous imprisonment in a narcotics case after holding him guilty under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Special Judge Ashutosh Pandey had convicted Suman Das on Wednesday under Sections 22(b), 25 and 29 of the NDPS Act. The quantum of punishment was pronounced on Saturday. Special Public Prosecutor Biswajit Deb represented the prosecution.

The case dates back to November 22, 2021, when police, acting on a tip-off, carried out a raid at Howrah Market in the Battala area under West Agartala police station.

Investigators alleged that Das was trafficking heroin and Yaba tablets from a scooter. During the operation, police recovered the contraband and took him into custody.

The investigation was conducted by Sub-Inspector Chinmoy Bhowmik, who later submitted the chargesheet before the special court.

To establish the charges, the prosecution examined 12 witnesses, including the investigating officer, a forensic expert from the Chemical Examiner's Division and the Judicial Magistrate who recorded relevant proceedings.

After considering the evidence, the court imposed an eight-year term of rigorous imprisonment on the convict under the provisions of the NDPS Act.
