Youth Dies by Suicide After Wife Sexual Assault by Father, Local Residents Publicly Humiliated Father by Garlanding Him with Shoes

A deeply disturbing incident has been reported from the Tila Bazar area under Nutan Bazar Police Station in Gomati district, where a young man allegedly died by suicide following the arrest of his father in connection with the alleged rape of the youth's wife.

According to police and local sources, the accused, identified as Pradip Das, was arrested after his daughter-in-law lodged a complaint alleging that she had been sexually assaulted by her father-in-law. The woman has also alleged that she had been subjected to prolonged physical and mental harassment by her in-laws.

Following the registration of the case, police reached the village and rescued the accused from an agitated crowd before taking him into custody. Local residents had allegedly assaulted and publicly humiliated him by garlanding him with shoes, smearing his face with ink, tying him to a pole, and throwing rotten eggs at him, creating a tense situation in the locality. Police intervened and brought the situation under control.

Hours after the incident, the accused's son, Sukumar Das, was found dead by suicide after allegedly hanging himself at his residence on Thursday night. Family members and local residents claimed that he was unable to cope with the social stigma and emotional trauma arising from the incident.

The incident has triggered widespread outrage across the area, with villagers demanding a fair and impartial investigation. While some residents have expressed sympathy for the bereaved family, others have called for strict legal action against anyone found guilty in the alleged sexual assault case.

Police have initiated separate investigations into both the alleged rape case and the subsequent death by suicide. Authorities have appealed to the public not to spread rumours or take the law into their own hands, stating that all aspects of the incident are being examined in accordance with the law.
