A 36-year-old man died while undergoing treatment after he was allegedly assaulted by a mob in West Tripura district earlier this week, police said on Saturday.

The deceased, identified as Gobinda Das of the Kalimata Sangha area near Agartala Railway Station, succumbed to his injuries at the Trauma Care Centre of Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital on Friday night.

According to his family, Das had been suffering from mental illness since undergoing surgery following a serious road accident in 2014 and would often wander away from home.

Family members said police from Amtali police station brought him home on Tuesday after rescuing him from the Kathaltali-Ranirkhamar area, where he had allegedly been assaulted by a group of people. They noticed multiple injuries on his body and admitted him to GBP Hospital the following day with the help of local residents.

Despite treatment, he died on Friday night, they said.

The family alleged that Das was assaulted without provocation and demanded a fair investigation, identification of all those involved and stringent legal action against the accused.

Police have registered a case in connection with the incident.

A police source said one person has been detained for questioning, while further investigation is underway.
