In a significant initiative aimed at improving access to higher education for tribal students, the Tripura Government has requested the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to allot land in the national capital for the construction of dedicated residential hostels for Scheduled Tribe (ST) students from the state pursuing higher studies in Delhi.

Tripura Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma raised the matter during a meeting with Delhi Lieutenant Governor and DDA Chairman Tarunjit Singh Sandhu on July 16. During the meeting, the minister submitted a demi-official (DO) letter seeking suitable land for the construction of a 100-seat boys' hostel and a 100-seat girls' hostel.

According to the minister, the proposed hostels are intended to provide safe, affordable and supportive accommodation for tribal students who travel from Tripura to Delhi for higher education. He said students from remote and economically weaker backgrounds often face significant challenges in securing accommodation in the national capital, affecting their academic pursuits.

Debbarma stated that the initiative reflects the Tripura Government's commitment to expanding educational opportunities and ensuring that tribal youth receive adequate support to pursue higher education outside the state. He expressed hope that the Delhi Development Authority would consider the proposal favourably and expedite the land allotment process so that the project could be implemented at the earliest.

The proposal comes at a time when the Tripura Government has also announced plans to strengthen its institutional presence outside the state by establishing Tripura Bhavans in major metropolitan cities, including Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad. These proposed facilities are expected to provide accommodation and support services for government officials, students and residents of Tripura visiting these cities.

However, despite these announcements, construction work on the proposed Tripura Bhavans has reportedly not commenced at any of the identified locations so far. The latest proposal for dedicated tribal students' hostels in Delhi has therefore renewed attention on the state's broader efforts to create support infrastructure for its citizens outside Tripura.

If approved, the proposed hostels would provide much-needed residential facilities for tribal students, reducing accommodation-related hardships and enabling them to pursue higher education in a more secure and conducive environment, while strengthening the state's long-term investment in education and human resource development.
