Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury on Thursday admitted that calling the South Tripura Superintendent of Police an "idiot" was inappropriate, saying the remark was made in anger after repeated attempts to contact the officer went unanswered.

Addressing a press conference in Sabroom, Chaudhury said he was frustrated as the Superintendent of Police did not respond to his calls while the Sub-Divisional Police Officer asked him and other CPI(M) leaders to return.

He also welcomed Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha's response to the controversy, saying he appreciated that the Chief Minister reacted within 24 hours, irrespective of whether the response was favourable.

However, Chaudhury sought clarification on the events surrounding Tuesday's memorial programme organised to mark the second death anniversary of CPI(M) leader Badal Shil.

He alleged that despite obtaining prior police permission, his convoy was stopped about four kilometres before Chottakhola and several vehicles carrying CPI(M) supporters were vandalised in the presence of police personnel. He claimed he had alerted Director General of Police Anurag before the programme, anticipating possible trouble, but alleged that no effective action followed after the convoy was stopped.

Chaudhury questioned why a programme permitted by the administration was not allowed to proceed and whether the administration had failed to maintain law and order.

Referring to the proposed Destination Tripura business initiative, the CPI(M) leader said he wanted the project to succeed and hoped the Maitri Bridge at Sabroom would become fully operational at the earliest. He added that his party would extend full cooperation to initiatives aimed at the state's development.
