The North Eastern Council (NEC), under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), has released Rs. 16.82 crore for Tripura during May–June 2026 to strengthen rural infrastructure, agriculture, tribal welfare, education, healthcare, livelihoods and cultural preservation across the state.
According to an official NEC press release, the financial assistance includes Es. 3.95 crore under the Schemes of NEC (SoNEC) and Rs. 12.87 crore under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS–Roads). The funds are aimed at accelerating inclusive development, particularly in remote and underserved regions of Tripura.
Under the SoNEC programme, NEC has supported a wide range of development initiatives. These include projects for biodiversity conservation, traditional healthcare, medicinal plant conservation and the preservation of indigenous knowledge systems. The initiatives are intended to promote the sustainable use of herbal resources while safeguarding traditional practices and creating livelihood opportunities for local communities.
To support tribal welfare, NEC has also provided financial assistance for the construction of a transit accommodation facility in Shillong for tribal students from Tripura pursuing higher education and for patients travelling for specialised medical treatment. The facility is expected to provide safe and affordable accommodation during their stay.
In the agriculture sector, NEC has funded the establishment of six Integrated Seed Processing Plants across Tripura. The project is expected to improve the availability of quality certified seeds, enhance agricultural productivity and increase farmers' incomes. Financial support has also been extended for goat rearing units to encourage scientific livestock farming, generate self-employment and strengthen sustainable rural livelihoods.
The Council has further invested in strengthening the laboratory infrastructure at the College of Veterinary Sciences, Agartala, enhancing teaching, research and diagnostic facilities for veterinary education and improving livestock healthcare services in the state.
Under NESIDS (Roads), NEC has released funds for the improvement of the Kowaifung Panijirai–Karbook Road and the Jampui Hill–Kangrai Road. These strategic road projects are expected to improve connectivity in geographically difficult areas, providing better access to healthcare, education, markets and government services while promoting trade, tourism and regional economic development.
In addition to the state-specific allocation, NEC also released Rs. 18.93 crore during May–June 2026 to various regional agencies, including universities, technical institutes, NGOs and societies, for the promotion and development of the North Eastern Region. A portion of this funding supported Tharlak Kut, the traditional festival of the Darlong community in Tripura, aimed at preserving the state's rich tribal cultural heritage.
The NEC stated that these investments reaffirm its commitment to fostering inclusive and sustainable development in Tripura through targeted interventions in agriculture, tribal welfare, education, healthcare, rural livelihoods, cultural preservation and strategic infrastructure, ultimately improving the quality of life and creating long-term development opportunities across the state.
