With the elections to 587 Village Committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) scheduled for September 27, political developments in Tripura's tribal belt have gathered pace amid indications that the BJP's central leadership is exploring a fresh strategy to strengthen its alliance with TIPRA Motha.
According to political sources, the BJP leadership in New Delhi is reportedly considering offering a significant national role to TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma. Among the options being discussed are appointing him as the Governor of a state or nominating him to the Rajya Sabha, which could subsequently pave the way for his induction into the Union Council of Ministers.
At the state level, senior TIPRA Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma is also believed to be under consideration for a key position in the Tripura Council of Ministers as part of efforts to reinforce cooperation between the two allies before the crucial Village Council elections.
However, sources close to the developments suggest that Pradyot Kishore Debbarma and other senior TIPRA Motha leaders are not seeking positions alone. They are understood to be pressing for a concrete and substantial development package for Tripura's tribal areas, arguing that any political arrangement must deliver visible benefits to indigenous communities. Party leaders reportedly believe that accepting high constitutional or ministerial posts without meaningful progress on tribal development could adversely affect the party's credibility in the hills.
The reported discussions come amid continuing political uncertainty over the future of the BJP-TIPRA Motha alliance. While both parties have maintained communication, several unresolved issues, including the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord, cabinet expansion, and tribal development commitments, are believed to remain under negotiation.
Political observers view the upcoming TTAADC Village Council elections as a crucial test for both parties. The BJP is keen to retain TIPRA Motha's support in the tribal belt, while TIPRA Motha is expected to leverage its political influence to secure stronger commitments from the Centre and the state government.
Neither the BJP nor TIPRA Motha has officially confirmed the reported proposals regarding gubernatorial, Rajya Sabha, or Union ministerial appointments. The developments remain based on political discussions and sources familiar with the ongoing negotiations.
