CPI(M) State Secretary and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury has alleged that while Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha repeatedly states that “the law will take its own course,” the reality on the ground is that law enforcement is functioning in favour of the ruling BJP rather than impartially.
Addressing a public gathering and speaking to the media after police prevented a scheduled protest meeting at Chittakhola in South Tripura district, Chaudhury claimed that the incident exposed what he described as the “partisan role” of the state administration and police. According to him, the opposition had obtained prior permission from the police to hold the meeting, but the programme was allegedly obstructed at the last moment.
He alleged that BJP workers, with the support of the police, created disturbances and prevented opposition supporters from reaching the venue. Chaudhury further claimed that despite being informed in advance about the possibility of such disruptions, the police failed to take preventive measures and instead acted against the opposition gathering.
The CPI(M) leader accused the state administration of allowing what he termed a "free hand" to ruling party supporters while restricting the democratic rights of opposition parties. Referring to the police action, he alleged that officers folded their hands before him and requested that the programme be cancelled , citing law and order concerns instead of ensuring security for the permitted event.
Chaudhury also criticised the conduct of local police officials and security personnel, alleging that they remained silent spectators while BJP supporters obstructed the programme. He claimed that the incident reflected a wider pattern in which democratic protests by opposition parties face administrative hurdles.
Similar another allegations came during protests at Kadamtala in North Tripura District over local issues, including demands related to the implementation of government welfare schemes, infrastructure development, and the publication of beneficiary lists.
Congress leaders claimed that local residents and Congress supporters had gathered to raise concerns over alleged irregularities in the delivery of public services. But some BJP supporters try to stop the rally with the help of police personnel, Congress leaders alleged.
The BJP and the state government had not issued an immediate response to both the allegations at the time of reporting. Police officials have also not publicly commented on the accusations regarding their handling of both the incidents.
The developments have once again brought the spotlight on the political atmosphere in Tripura, with the opposition alleging misuse of administrative machinery.
