Tripura Chief Secretary JK Sinha, IAS on Wednesday lauded the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) for its sustained contribution to rural transformation in the state, describing the institution as a key partner in strengthening agriculture, livelihoods and rural infrastructure.

Addressing the 45th Foundation Day celebration of NABARD at Polo Hotel, Agartala, the Chief Secretary said the occasion was an opportunity to think collectively about the future development of Tripura. He particularly appreciated the leadership of Tanushri Bhattacharya, General Manager, NABARD, Tripura Regional Office, for steering several impactful initiatives aimed at improving the lives of rural communities.

Sinha expressed confidence that NABARD's continued interventions would help Tripura achieve surplus agricultural production, paving the way for growth in the secondary and tertiary sectors. He noted that fish and egg production remain priority areas, as the state still depends significantly on supplies from outside. He said NABARD has been providing not only credit support but also institutional and developmental assistance to various government departments to strengthen these livelihood sectors.

The Chief Secretary urged Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) to adopt an entrepreneurial approach for achieving sustainable growth. He also acknowledged NABARD's important role in preparing the State Focus Paper and implementing district credit plans, which have contributed to maintaining a healthy Credit-Deposit Ratio in the state.

Highlighting Tripura's development challenges, Sinha observed that nearly 73 per cent of the state's geographical area is under forest cover, while much of the remaining land is densely populated, limiting large-scale infrastructure expansion. However, he said investor confidence in Tripura is rising, citing the recent Destination Tripura programme that attracted investment proposals worth Rs. 1.21 lakh crore through 342 MoUs. He also appreciated GM Tanushri Bhattacharya for promoting Tripura as an investment destination through a video message encouraging investors to explore opportunities in the state.

During the celebration, NABARD launched several rural development initiatives, including the Unakoti Gram Vihar Project, Malbasa Rural Haat Project, TRIBES Projects in Ambassa, Longtharai Valley, Debipur and Amarpur, Karma FPO, a Common Facilitation Centre, and a Movable Cart Project. The programme also witnessed financial support to Deo Valley FPO by Tripura Gramin Bank and the felicitation of women farmers under the International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026.

The event reaffirmed NABARD's commitment to inclusive rural development, strengthening farmer institutions, promoting tribal livelihoods and building sustainable prosperity across Tripura.
