What began as a humanitarian campaign to save the life of a two-year-old girl from Tripura has now turned into a political controversy, with leaders from different parties being accused of competing for credit over the child's treatment.

Former Tripura MP Pratima Bhoumik has announced that public crowdfunding for the treatment of two-year-old Manashree Chowdhury is no longer required, stating that adequate arrangements have now been made for her medical care.

Pratima Bhoumik was the first political leader to stand beside Manashree's family after learning about the child's rare and life-threatening illness. She appealed through social media for people to extend financial support, triggering a massive crowdfunding campaign with an estimated target of around Rs.18 crore to cover the cost of advanced treatment.

As the issue gained statewide attention, the family approached Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, who assured them of all possible assistance from the state government. Subsequently, under the initiative of Dr. Abirlal Nath at AGMC & GBP Hospital, a team of neurologists and pediatric specialists held discussions on the child's medical condition. The doctors decided that expert consultation from AIIMS, New Delhi, would be essential before finalising the treatment plan.

It was during this period that the issue reportedly took a political turn. CPI(M) State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury visited Manashree's residence and assured the family of support. At the same time, several political figures were seen extending assistance, leading to allegations that different individuals were trying to claim credit for the treatment initiative that had initially been spearheaded by Pratima Bhoumik.

Former Chief Minister and Present West Tripura Parliament Member Biplab Kumar Deb also intervened by speaking with doctors at AIIMS, New Delhi, to facilitate the child's treatment and medical evaluation. According to reports, AIIMS specialists have since examined Manashree and are expected to determine the next course of treatment after reviewing her medical reports.

Against this backdrop, Pratima Bhoumik on Sunday announced that there is no longer any need for public crowdfunding for Manashree's treatment. Her statement suggests that the required medical support and financial arrangements are now being addressed through institutional and official channels.

The case has drawn widespread public attention not only because of the child's critical medical condition but also due to the political debate surrounding who deserves credit for the efforts made to secure her treatment. While leaders from different political parties have extended support at various stages, many observers believe the priority should remain ensuring the best possible treatment and recovery for young Manashree rather than engaging in a contest over political recognition.
