Expelled BJP leader arrested on charges of raping minor

Police on Monday arrested expelled BJP leader Pintu Ranjan Ghosh, the prime accused in an alleged rape case of a minor in Sepahijala district, officials said.
According to police, Ghosh had been absconding since the case was registered and was arrested during a naka checking operation by Melaghar police following a tip-off.
Police said the accused was intercepted while allegedly attempting to flee towards Agartala in a vehicle. Police had been tracking his movements after he went into hiding following registration of the case.
The case is related to allegations that the accused had sexually assaulted a minor over the past two years. The incident had triggered public outrage in the area, with residents demanding his immediate arrest.
Police said the investigation had been conducted on priority from the outset and that the arrest was made after sustained efforts to trace the accused.
Police said Ghosh will be produced before a local court and his custodial remand will be sought for further interrogation and investigation into the case.
