In a remarkable story of perseverance, determination, and the transformative power of education, Dr. Kiran Bhowmik has earned his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Economics from Tripura University, overcoming severe financial hardship to achieve academic excellence.
Born and raised in Udaipur, the historic town of Tripura, Dr. Bhowmik grew up in a modest joint family where financial struggles were a daily reality. His father, Kajal Bhowmik, worked as a Daily Rated Worker (DRW) in the Department of Agriculture, Government of Tripura, supporting a large family with limited means. Despite these challenges, Kiran nurtured an unwavering passion for education and remained determined to build a better future through academic achievement.
He began his schooling at Gokulpur Colony Higher Secondary School before pursuing Higher Secondary education at Kirit Bikram Institution (KBI), Udaipur, where he studied Mathematics and Economics. During his teenage years, financial constraints nearly forced him to abandon his studies. Some relatives even advised him to join the local brick-making industry to support the family's income.
However, his mother, Namita Bhowmik, became the driving force behind his educational journey. Firmly believing that education was the key to breaking the cycle of poverty, she encouraged both Kiran and his younger brother, Mrinal Bhowmik, to continue their studies despite the family's economic difficulties. Her unwavering faith became the foundation of his success.
Determined to pursue higher education, Kiran secured admission to Netaji Subhash Mahavidyalaya, Udaipur, with the encouragement and support of former Minister Anil Sarkar, student leader Shubha Chakraborty, and then Principal Dr. Sanjoy Roy. There, he made history by becoming the first student to graduate with an Honours degree in Economics from the college. Notably, he completed his entire undergraduate programme through self-study without relying on private tuition, demonstrating exceptional dedication and discipline.
His outstanding academic record paved the way for admission to the Department of Economics at Tripura University, where he completed his Master's degree before embarking on doctoral research. Under the supervision of Professor Subhrabaran Das, Dr. Bhowmik conducted his Ph.D. research on "Change in Cropping Pattern, Productivity and Livelihood of Tribal Agricultural Farmers: A Study on Tripura." The study provides valuable insights into agricultural transformation, tribal livelihoods, and rural development, contributing significantly to policy discussions and academic research in the state.
Beyond his doctoral work, Dr. Bhowmik consistently pursued lifelong learning. He was recognised as an NPTEL Motivated Learner, completing eight advanced certification courses offered by premier institutions including the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. The courses covered diverse subjects such as Project Management, Econometrics, Environment and Resource Economics, Labour Economics, Healthcare Survey Data Analysis, Large-Scale Data Handling, and Econometric Modelling, reflecting his commitment to expanding his academic expertise.
Dr. Bhowmik also served as a Research Associate in studies conducted for the Sixteenth Finance Commission, contributing to research on state finances and public policy. Among the notable recommendations emerging from the research was the need to enhance salaries for government employees, highlighting the practical policy relevance of the team's work.
Reflecting on his academic journey, Dr. Bhowmik expressed gratitude to his mentors and teachers, particularly his PhD supervisor Professor Subhrabaran Das, Professor Subir Kumar Sen of Tripura University, Professor Sabuj Kumar Manda of IIT Madras, Professor Pratap Chandra Mohanty of IIT Roorkee, and many others who guided and inspired him throughout his career.
Dr. Kiran Bhowmik's achievement represents far more than the conferment of a doctoral degree. His journey from financial hardship to academic excellence stands as a powerful testament to resilience, family support, quality mentorship, and the life-changing impact of education.
For countless students across Tripura, especially those from middle-class and economically disadvantaged families, his story offers a message of hope and inspiration.
