An elderly woman suffering from severe jaundice and a significant drop in haemoglobin was successfully treated at Unity Hospital after being referred from AGMC, highlighting another milestone in advanced gastroenterology care in Tripura.

The patient was admitted in a critical condition with deep jaundice and anaemia. Following a detailed clinical evaluation, a CT scan revealed cholangiocarcinoma, a malignant cancer of the bile duct, which had caused a severe narrowing of the bile duct and obstructed the normal flow of bile.

A team of specialists at Unity Hospital performed an advanced endoscopic intervention to relieve the obstruction. During the procedure, an 8-centimetre self-expanding metal stent was carefully placed across the narrowed segment of the bile duct, restoring bile drainage and relieving the blockage.

The procedure was successful, and the patient's condition improved remarkably within 24 hours. Her jaundice began to subside, and her overall clinical condition stabilized rapidly. Following significant improvement, she was discharged from the hospital with appropriate medical advice and follow-up recommendations.

Hospital authorities stated that timely diagnosis and advanced endoscopic biliary stenting play a crucial role in managing patients with obstructive jaundice caused by bile duct cancer. Such minimally invasive procedures not only provide rapid symptom relief but also improve the patient's quality of life by avoiding more invasive surgical interventions in selected cases.

The successful treatment underscores the growing availability of advanced gastroenterology and endoscopic services in Tripura, enabling patients with complex hepatobiliary disorders to receive specialised care within the state.
