Agony and ecstasy in Bangladesh over Sheikh Hasina’s planned arrival back home in December this year

A new-item recently published by international news agency Reuters has sparked a massive political storm in Bangladesh currently reeling under incompetent BNP rule and escalating depredations of fundamentalist Jamati and Hephazati goons and thugs. In a recent interview with the Reuters Sheikh Hasina, currently sheltered in Delhi, has asserted that she will return to Bangladesh in December this year-come what may. This single news item has sent shock waves down the spine of the ruling BNP leaders and the pathologically communal and anti-Hindu Jamatis and Hephazatis . Already the BNP government’s media department has sounded a cautionary note that publishing and broadcasting any news about Sheik Hasina is legally barred as she has already been sentenced to death by the so-called International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in a farcical trial during the disastrous one and half year rule of the interim regime headed by Md Yunus. Hasina has however said in the interview that after returning home to Bangladesh she will surrender to court and it is easily anticipated that she will be sent straight to jail .
But her supporters in the country comprising leaders and workers of the Awami League are reportedly enthused by the news of her planned arrival and planning to organize a grand reception for Bangladesh’s longest-serving prime minister (1996-2001, 2009-2024). Sources from Bangladesh said that despite the ban imposed on the party by the erstwhile interim regime, workers and supporters of Awami League occasionally take out quick processions on various issues despite police action . “For all the opposition to the party, Awami League remains the country’s largest political organization and is now lying dormant ; once Hasina arrives the party workers and supporters will be galvanized for action and the BNP dispensation will not dare to take any action” said a senior Awami League leader from Brahmanbaria on condition of anonymity.
He said that the BNP government has not shown any sign of being able to resolve or ease the extremely poor economic situation in the country and it has made another big mistake by cozying up to China and by giving the Mongla port and the Teesta river basin to that imperialist force on lease. “Once China sets foot here it will gradually gobble up the land of Bangladesh because no government in the country will be able to repay the easy loan they will be offering to trap the government ; the Chinese have done the same in Sri Lanka, Pakistan and many other countries including some in Africa ; people know this and are resentful” said the Awami League leader . He added that the only political capital of the Jamatis is ‘Hindu and India hatred for nothing’ but this can not last long . The leader predicted that if Sheikh Hasina arrives the people of the country will rally behind her and there will be largescale chaos and the BNP government led by a weak leader Tarique Rahaman will have no clue to coping with the situation. He concluded that Bangladesh will be in a state of turmoil soon unless the fundamentalist forces are drastically curbed and peoples economic demands addressed.
