The proposed commencement of full-fledged commercial trade through the Sabroom Integrated Check Post (ICP) with Bangladesh emerged as one of the most discussed issues during the two-day Destination Tripura Business Conclave 2026, with industrialists, exporters and business delegations from India and abroad repeatedly seeking clarity on when the trade corridor would become fully operational.
According to officials and participants, the strategic importance of the Sabroom Land Port has generated tremendous interest among investors, who believe the gateway could transform Tripura into a major logistics and export hub for Northeast India. Many delegates raised questions regarding the timeline for opening regular commercial trade through the Sabroom-Ramgarh border, considering its proximity to Bangladesh's Chattogram Port, located only about 72 kilometres away by road.
The significance of the issue was underscored by the participation of Shri Vivek Verma, Secretary of the Department of Land Ports Authority ofIndia, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, who attended the conclave to interact with stakeholders on border trade and infrastructure.
The High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India M Riaz Hamidullah, who also participated in the conclave, reaffirmed Bangladesh's commitment to maintaining strong and friendly relations with India. During his interaction with delegates, he emphasized that the Government of Bangladesh is keen to strengthen bilateral cooperation, including trade, connectivity and economic partnerships, giving further encouragement to investors looking at Tripura as a gateway to regional markets.
The Sabroom Integrated Check Post is regarded as one of Tripura's most strategic infrastructure projects. Established in March 2024, the land port borders Ramgarh in Bangladesh and is expected to significantly reduce transportation costs and transit time for goods moving between Northeast India and international markets through Chattogram Port.
Tripura currently has three operational land ports—Agartala (Akhaura), Srimantapur (Bibirbazar) and Sabroom (Ramgarh). While Agartala remains the busiest land port in terms of passenger movement and cargo traffic, policymakers and industry leaders believe Sabroom has the potential to become a game-changing trade gateway because of its direct connectivity to Bangladesh's seaport.
The renewed focus on border trade comes shortly after Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently launched the Vinimay – Land Port Management System in New Delhi, a nationwide digital initiative aimed at making India's land ports smarter, more transparent and more efficient. The new platform is expected to improve cargo handling, customs procedures and logistics management across land ports, including those in Tripura.
Industry representatives at the Tripura Business Conclave 2026 observed that once commercial operations through the Sabroom corridor begin on a regular basis, the state could witness substantial growth in exports, logistics, warehousing, food processing and manufacturing. They noted that enhanced connectivity with Bangladesh would not only strengthen Tripura's economy but also position the state as a vital gateway for India's Act East Policy and regional trade with South and Southeast Asia particularly with Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.
With unprecedented investor participation and strong interest in Tripura's strategic location, the operationalisation of full-scale commercial trade through the Sabroom Land Port is now widely viewed as one of the most crucial factors in translating the investment commitments made during the Destination Tripura Business Conclave 2026 into long-term industrial growth and economic development Timeline for Opening Full-Fledged Trade with Bangladesh
