Visiting Industrialist Allegedly Assaulted While En Route to Destination Tripura Business Conclave, Driver Seriously Injured, Four Detained

A visiting industrialist from Guwahati, who had travelled to Tripura to participate in the Destination Tripura Business Conclave 2026, allegedly came under attack along with his driver in broad daylight on Thursday, raising fresh concerns over the state's law and order and the security arrangements for visiting investors.
According to the complaint, the incident took place at around 4:40 pm near Badharghat College Chowmuhani in Agartala when industrialist Kamaljyoti Choudhury was travelling from a city hotel to the Business Conclave venue at the Hapania International Fair Ground in vehicle TR01-BV-0631.
It is alleged that a motorcycle bearing registration number TR01-AB-9200 collided with the vehicle. Following the minor accident, an argument reportedly broke out after the car's driver, Tanmoy Deb, sought an explanation from the motorcycle riders. The situation allegedly escalated when several youths assaulted the driver.
When industrialist Kamaljyoti Choudhury stepped out of the vehicle to intervene and protest, he too was allegedly punched and physically assaulted. Eyewitnesses claimed that the visibly frightened businessman fled to a nearby battery shop for safety. A shop employee later stated that Choudhury was trembling with fear following the incident.
Significantly, local residents alleged that police personnel were present only a short distance from the scene when the assault took place, but no immediate attempt was made to intervene or rescue the victims. These allegations have further intensified questions over the police response during the incident. However, the police have not yet officially commented on these specific allegations.
Later police reached the spot after receiving information. Although the industrialist was advised to undergo medical examination, he reportedly stated that his injuries were minor and expressed his desire to attend the Business Conclave at Hapania. He was subsequently escorted to the Hapania venue under police protection.
The driver, Tanmoy Deb, sustained serious injuries in the assault. According to reports, one of his teeth was broken and he suffered severe head injuries. He was initially taken to ILS Hospital before being referred to GB Pant Hospital for advanced treatment.
Police later launched an operation and detained four persons in connection with the incident. They are currently being interrogated as investigators attempt to establish the sequence of events and determine responsibility.
The alleged assault on an investor attending Tripura's flagship investment summit has sparked concern among business circles and observers, particularly as the state seeks to project itself as a safe and attractive destination for domestic and international investment.
