Bangladesh High Commissioner Proposes Screening of Award-Winning Films in Tripura to Strengthen Cultural Ties

Bangladesh has proposed screening its award-winning films in Tripura as part of a broader initiative to deepen people-to-people contacts and strengthen cultural cooperation between the two neighbouring regions. The proposal was discussed during a meeting between Bangladesh High Commissioner M. Riaz Hamidullah and Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha in Agartala yesterday during the Destination Tripura Business Conclave 2026.

According to the report, the proposed initiative aims to promote cultural exchanges through cinema and foster stronger social and artistic connections between Bangladesh and Tripura. During the meeting, the High Commissioner emphasized the importance of expanding cultural engagement and encouraging greater interaction between the people of both sides of the border.

Hamidullah also revealed that discussions included the possibility of screening Bangladeshi films in Tripura, describing cinema as an effective medium for enhancing mutual understanding and strengthening longstanding cultural relations. He noted that such initiatives could create meaningful opportunities for artists, filmmakers and audiences in both regions.

The High Commissioner further stated that his travel experience in Tripura had been positive and highlighted the region's rich natural beauty and warm hospitality. He expressed optimism that enhanced cultural cooperation would further reinforce the historical and cultural bonds shared by Bangladesh and Tripura.

On bilateral relations, Hamidullah said dialogue between Bangladesh, the Government of India and the Tripura Government continues through established communication channels. He added that the Bangladesh High Commission remains in regular contact with the Central Government and that the Tripura Government is fully informed about ongoing developments. Expressing confidence in future cooperation, he asserted that there is no possibility of any disruption in the continuing dialogue between the two sides.

Notably, Ratan Saha, brother of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, is a well-known figure in Tripura's cinema industry and has been associated with the promotion and development of regional films over the years.
