Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday said the rapid development of the Northeast is vital for India's economic progress as well as national security, while Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia projected Tripura as one of the region's most attractive investment destinations with strong connectivity and abundant natural resources.

Addressing the inaugural session of the Destination Tripura Business Conclave 2026 virtually, Goyal said the Centre had prioritised the development of the Northeast over the past decade, resulting in significant economic growth.

He said Tripura's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) had increased from around Rs 19,200 crore in 2011-12 to nearly Rs 90,000 crore in 2024-25. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of the Northeast as "Ashtalakshmi", Goyal said industrialisation of Tripura was essential for creating employment, improving livelihoods and strengthening India's strategic interests.

In a separate address, Scindia invited industry leaders to invest in Tripura, describing the state as a gateway to Southeast Asia with growing infrastructure and a favourable business ecosystem.

He highlighted the state's reserves of natural gas, bamboo, rubber, agarwood, tea and horticultural products, along with its skilled workforce, investor-friendly policies and international internet connectivity.

Scindia said projects such as the Maitri Setu, Sabroom Special Economic Zone, Integrated Check Post and multimodal transport links were transforming Tripura from a landlocked state into a key trade and logistics hub.

Calling upon investors to seize emerging opportunities, he said Tripura was well-positioned to play a leading role in the Northeast's next phase of economic growth.
