Former Advisor under Government of Assam Higher Education Department, Prof. Debabrata Das has formally assumed charge as the Vice-Chancellor-designate of Tripura University, raising fresh hopes for restoring administrative stability, academic excellence and institutional credibility at the Central University.
Prof. Das today took charge in the presence of Vice-Chancellor (In-Charge) Prof. Shyamal Das, Registrar Prof. Samir Kumar Sil, and Finance Officer Debashish Paul. The formal assumption of office marks the beginning of a new chapter for the university, which has witnessed a series of administrative and academic controversies over the past several months.
The Ministry of Education had notified Prof. Das's appointment on July 2, 2026.
A distinguished academic in the field of Commerce, Prof. Das completed his Master's and Ph.D. before joining the Department of Business Management at Tezpur University. He later served as the Vice-Chancellor of the Assam Rajiv Gandhi University of Cooperative Management (ARGUCOM), Sivasagar, and is currently serving as Advisor to the Higher Education Department, Government of Assam. His long administrative experience is expected to help strengthen governance at Tripura University.
The new Vice-Chancellor-designate assumes office at a crucial time when the university has been facing criticism over several issues relating to administration, financial management, academic governance and legal compliance.
The university has also faced criticism over proposed implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP)-based postgraduate curriculum from the 2026-27 academic session without prior approval from the statutory Academic Council and Executive Council, besides concerns over the implementation of the Ph.D. Regulations, 2024.
Academicians and employees hope the new Vice-Chancellor will strengthen institutional governance, ensure transparency in financial administration, uphold statutory procedures in academic decision-making, improve examination standards and ensure timely compliance with judicial directions.
The appointment of Prof. Debabrata Das is widely seen as an opportunity to restore confidence among students, faculty members and employees while reinforcing the university's academic reputation and administrative accountability.
