Alleging double standards in the enforcement of civic regulations, Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma has accused the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) of penalising ordinary citizens for minor violations while allegedly failing to uphold the same standards in the delivery of civic services.
In a Facebook post, Debbarma claimed that the AMC imposes hefty fines on members of the public for small mistakes and civic offences. However, he alleged that the civic body itself is violating basic norms in several areas of municipal administration. One of his principal allegations concerns the transportation of municipal waste. According to the MLA, AMC garbage trucks are carrying waste through city roads without proper covers, resulting in garbage falling onto the streets during transit. He further alleged that the scattered waste creates unhygienic conditions and foul odour, causing inconvenience to residents and commuters.
Apart from the issue of waste transportation, Debbarma also raised concerns over the condition of roadside drains maintained by the AMC. He alleged that many drains remain uncovered despite being located in busy public areas, posing a serious safety risk to pedestrians.
The MLA said he recently noticed one such hazardous location in the Ramchandraghat area of Khowai, where an uncovered roadside drain could lead to accidents. He questioned why the civic authorities had not installed protective covers over such drains despite the apparent danger to the public.
Calling for immediate corrective measures, Debbarma urged the AMC to cover all exposed roadside drains and improve civic maintenance to ensure public safety. He also appealed to citizens to identify and report similar locations where open drains without covers pose a threat to pedestrians.
As part of his public outreach, the Tipra Motha legislator requested residents to share photographs and locations of uncovered drains in the comments section of his Facebook post so that the matter can be taken up with the concerned authorities for prompt action. The allegations have sparked discussion over the quality of civic services and municipal accountability in Agartala. The Agartala Municipal Corporation had not issued any official response to the allegations at the time of filing this report.
