The chief minister Dr Manik Saha today laid the foundation stone of a statue of ‘Bharat Keshri’ Dr Syama Prasad Mookherjee to be erected in front of Agartala Town Hall as the fist step towards fulfilling his earlier commitment that the Town Hall will be renamed as Syama Prasad Mookherjee Town Hall. This was done today in presence of the Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Dipak Majumder and the newly nominated BJP state president Abhishek Debroy on the birth anniversary of Dr Syama Prasad Mookherjee who was born today, 6th july in the year 1901 in Calcutta.
Apart from this, a grand programme was held in the BJP state headquarter at Krishna Nagar area of Agartala to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Syama Prasad Mookherjee, the man whose relentless fight for a homeland of Bengali Hindus had led to the partition of undivided Bengal and creation of the state of West Bengal through a resolution passed in the undivided Bengal assembly on June 20 1947, two months ahead of partition of India. Addressing the programme the chief minister Dr Manik Saha recalled how Dr Mookherjee’s firm stand had led to the creation of a Hindu homeland in West Bengal by defeating the conspiracies of communal Muslim League and its infamous leader and chief minister of undivided Bengal , Hossain Shaheed Surawardy. Dr Saha also highlighted Syama Prasad’s contribution to the Calcutta university as its youngest vice chancellor during the four year period of 1934-1938.
Pandit Nehru as prime minister had inducted Syama Prasad as minister for industries in the interim government in June 1947 but he resigned from the cabinet in protest against the Nehru-Liaquat pact of 1950 that had sacrificed the interest of Bengali Hindus. In 1951 Syama Prasad had launched the now abolished Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) and died in mysterious circumstances after being jailed in Kashmir following arrest there . “ His contribution is unparalleled in history and we owe our identity as Bengali Hindus to revered Dr Syama Prasad Mookherjee ; the younger generation should also know that our party BJP had emerged from the womb of Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) on April 6 1980 ; we should all worship him” said the chief minister after garlanding a portrait of Syama Prasad and lighting the holy lamp.
Meanwhile, the AMC Ward no -18 and the CRPF (124) battalion joined hands to observe the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Syama Prasad Mookherjee by planting 125 saplings in the ward. The programme was attended and organized by the corporator of the ward Abhishek Datta, CRPF second in command of the battalion Sachidananda Misra, commandant Saumen Biswas , other officials of the CRPF (124 battalion) and local residents of the Ward no-18.
