Four legislators representing North Tripura and Unakoti districts have jointly appealed to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to establish a railway division at Dharmanagar, arguing that the town offers strategic, administrative and infrastructural advantages.
The representation, submitted on June 30, was signed by CPI(M) MLAs Sailendra Chandra Nath and Islam Uddin, Congress Legislature Party leader Birajit Sinha, and TIPRA Motha MLA Philip Kumar Reang.
In their memorandum, the legislators recalled that the Centre had announced plans in 2014 to create new railway divisions at Silchar, Gulbarga and Jammu. While the Jammu division has since become operational, the Silchar proposal was not pursued due to technical objections and the Gulbarga proposal was dropped following an evaluation.
The MLAs contended that Dharmanagar is well placed to host a railway division because of its location near the borders of Assam, Mizoram and Bangladesh. They noted that the town has been part of the railway network since 1964 and could serve as an administrative hub for railway operations in the region.
The memorandum also stated that the Railways already owns around 56.37 hectares of land at Dharmanagar, with additional land available nearby for future expansion if required.
According to the legislators, setting up a railway division would improve rail administration, create employment opportunities, strengthen connectivity and support economic growth in North Tripura and Unakoti districts, which together have a population of around 15 lakh.
They further claimed that a Detailed Project Report has reportedly been prepared for a proposed railway line linking Dharmanagar with Kailasahar, Kamalpur, Khowai, Mohanpur, Agartala and Sabroom, adding that the proposed division would complement future expansion plans.
Copies of the memorandum were also sent to Chief Minister Manik Saha, Tripura East MP Kriti Devi Debbarman, Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee and the General Manager of Northeast Frontier Railway.
