The Journalists' Development Union of Tripura (JDUT) has strongly condemned the alleged assault on journalist Rathish Debnath and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused, expressing concern over what it described as a growing trend of attacks on media professionals in the state.According to a press statement issued by the union, the incident took place on June 25 at North Majlishpur under Ranirbazar Police Station, where journalist Rathish Debnath was allegedly attacked and harassed at his residence by two local residents, identified as Chandan Debnath and Tapas Majumdar.
The union claimed that the accused are allegedly involved in illegal drug trafficking in the locality. It alleged that Debnath had initiated efforts to gather information on the reported narcotics activities following complaints from local residents, and that the attack was carried out in retaliation for his journalistic work. These allegations have not been independently verified.
In a show of solidarity, a delegation of the Journalists' Development Union of Tripura visited the residence of the assaulted journalist on Friday to assess the situation and express support. The delegation later met officials at Ranirbazar Police Station to inquire about the status of the case, following a complaint lodged in connection with the incident. The union urged the police to immediately arrest the accused and ensure adequate security for Rathish Debnath. It also called upon the administration to conduct a fair and impartial investigation into the matter.
