A suspected case of joint suicide has sent shockwaves through Tripura's Khowai district after the bodies of a married woman and an unmarried man were found hanging from the same tree inside a rubber plantation at Nadiachan Para in Kunjaban village under Kalyanpur Police Station.

The deceased have been identified as Haridas Paul (30), son of Bhulu Paul, and Papiya Shil Paul (32), wife of Jiban Paul. According to police, both were residents of Kunjaban village. Their bodies were found hanging from the same tree using a nylon net during the intervening night of June 30 and July 1, 2026.

According to local residents, the bodies were discovered on Wednesday morning, following which the police were immediately informed. A police team led by Sub-Inspector Anjan Debbarma of Kalyanpur Police Station reached the spot and initiated a preliminary investigation. Later, Additional Superintendent of Police (Khowai) Justin Joseph and Officer-in-Charge Ashish Sarkar also visited the scene with additional personnel.

Police recovered the bodies after completing all legal formalities and sent them for post-mortem examination. An Unnatural Death (UD) case has been registered at Kalyanpur Police Station, and a detailed investigation is underway.

During the preliminary inquiry, local residents reportedly informed investigators that Haridas and Papiya were allegedly involved in a romantic relationship, which had become a source of frequent disputes and tension within their respective families. Police sources said both families have denied any such relationship. Investigators are examining whether social and family pressure may have played a role in the suspected joint suicide. However, police emphasized that no conclusion has been reached and that all possible angles are being investigated.

Papiya Shil Paul was married and is survived by her husband, who reportedly works as a tom-tom driver, and their two children—a son and a daughter. Haridas Paul was unmarried and reportedly worked as a mason.

Investigators are examining the family background of both deceased, their mobile phone records, and other available evidence to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the tragedy. Police said the exact cause of death and the circumstances surrounding the incident will be determined only after the post-mortem report and completion of the investigation.

The incident has left the entire locality in mourning, with residents expressing shock and grief over the deaths. Police have appealed to the public to refrain from speculation while the investigation is in progress.
