Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu on Wednesday described legislatures as the "temples of democracy" and said elected representatives must always place public service above personal interests, as they hold office because of the trust reposed in them by the people.

Speaking at the 63rd Foundation Day celebration of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, the Governor said the dignity of a legislature is upheld through the ideals, commitment and sense of responsibility demonstrated by its members.

"Legislatures are temples of democracy. Public representatives are here to serve the people who elected them, not themselves," he said.

Highlighting the state's development efforts, Nallu said the government has been working to improve the socio-economic conditions of all sections of society while expanding access to education and healthcare. He also referred to progress in strengthening law and order, governance, infrastructure and agriculture, besides implementing welfare initiatives for the tribal population.

The Governor expressed hope that members of both the treasury and opposition benches would continue to work together in the larger interest of Tripura's development.

Recalling Tripura's constitutional evolution, he traced the state's journey from its merger with the Indian Union to achieving full statehood and establishing a full-fledged Legislative Assembly.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath, in his address, highlighted the historical development of the Assembly and urged legislators to uphold its democratic traditions while working for public welfare.

Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury described India's democratic system as one of the strongest in the world and paid tribute to former members of the Tripura Legislative Assembly for their contributions.

Former Assembly Speakers Jyotirmoy Nath, Jiten Sarkar and Ratan Chakraborty also addressed the gathering, reflecting on the Assembly's role in strengthening democratic institutions over the decades.

Retired Assembly employee and Padma Shri awardee Naresh Chandra Debbarma was felicitated by the Governor during the programme.

Speaker Ram Pada Jamatia delivered the vote of thanks, while Assembly Secretary A.K. Nath welcomed the dignitaries. Ministers, legislators and other invited guests attended the celebration.
