The Sub-Divisional Administration in Kanchanpur of North Tripura has initiated stringent administrative and legal action following the detection of an alleged large-scale fraud involving the illegal withdrawal and misappropriation of government ration rice from the Anandabazar Fair Price Shop (FPS) godown.
Acting on the directions of Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Ashish Kumar Biswas, the administration has filed a criminal case against seven individuals after a preliminary inquiry allegedly uncovered the fraudulent use of forged documents to siphon off government food grains.
Those named in the case include storekeeper Pranoy Masha, Chief Food Inspector Gunaram Molsom, and five ration dealers—Lalringpuiya Reang, Protu Reang, Kaitohum Reang, Khujiram Reang, and Prasad Reang. Prior to the registration of the criminal case, all seven had been served show-cause notices seeking explanations for the alleged irregularities.
According to the preliminary findings of the administration, nearly 145 metric tonnes of government ration rice were illegally lifted from the Anandabazar government ration godown over the past several months by allegedly using forged official documents. The estimated market value of the misappropriated food grains is around Rs.45 lakh.
Officials believe the scale of the fraud could be significantly larger, with the amount of misappropriated food grains likely to increase as the investigation progresses.
The alleged scam came to light after information regarding suspicious transactions reached the SDM's office, prompting a detailed inquiry. Investigators reportedly found prima facie evidence indicating that forged records had been used to facilitate the unauthorized withdrawal of government food grains. Following these findings, the administration swiftly escalated the matter by initiating criminal proceedings against the accused.
Police have now begun a detailed investigation to determine whether additional individuals or an organized network were involved in the alleged fraud. Authorities expect that the probe will uncover the full extent of the corruption and identify everyone responsible for the diversion of subsidized food grains.
The incident has triggered widespread concern across the Kanchanpur subdivision, as allegations of such a massive irregularity in the Public Distribution System (PDS) have raised serious questions about oversight and accountability. Residents are now closely watching the progress of the investigation and the administration's next course of action as efforts continue to bring all those responsible to justice.
