Tripura Health Secretary Kiran Kumar Gitte, IAS is scheduled to visit Govind Ballabh (GB) Hospital at around 11:00 am today to assess the situation arising from the recent surge in patient attendance at the state's premier government healthcare institution.
According to sources, a section of doctors attached to GB Hospital and Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) have, over the past several days, refrained from seeing patients at their private chambers following the state government's recent policy decision affecting private medical practice. As a result, a significantly larger number of patients are now seeking treatment directly at GB Hospital.
Hospital authorities have reportedly witnessed an unusually heavy influx of patients, particularly in the Pediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynaecology departments, where parents bringing sick children and expectant mothers are facing long waiting hours for consultations. The sudden increase in patient load has also put additional pressure on doctors and hospital staff, making it challenging to provide timely medical services.
Sources said the Health Secretary's visit is aimed at taking stock of the prevailing situation and discussing possible measures to address the increased patient burden. During his visit, Gitte is expected to interact with doctors from GB Hospital and AGMC to understand the challenges they are facing and explore ways to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services for the public.
The visit assumes significance as the state government seeks to maintain efficient healthcare delivery while addressing the concerns of medical professionals and ensuring that patients, particularly vulnerable groups such as children and pregnant women, continue to receive timely treatment.
Officials are expected to review the current situation and consider appropriate administrative measures to improve patient management and hospital services in the coming days.
