Tripura Government Extends Service of Retired IAS Officer Apurba Roy for the Ninth Time, Rekindling Debate Over Extension Policy

The Tripura Government has once again extended the service of retired IAS officer Apurba Roy, marking his ninth extension after retirement. The decision has reignited public discussion over the state's policy on granting service extensions to retired senior bureaucrats and the criteria followed in such appointments.

According to the existing extension policy of the Tripura Government, a retired officer may be re-employed on the basis of administrative necessity, with service extensions permitted up to the age of 65 years. Similar provisions also exist under the guidelines of the Central Government, allowing experienced officers to continue in service where their expertise is considered essential.

However, the repeated extension granted to Apurba Roy has once again sparked debate over whether the policy is being applied uniformly. Questions are being raised in administrative and public circles as to why many other retired officers do not receive similar opportunities despite the availability of such provisions.

Observers argue that while the government has the authority to retain experienced officers in key positions, transparency in the selection process is equally important to avoid perceptions of preferential treatment. Critics have called for clearly defined criteria to ensure that all eligible retired officers are considered fairly whenever extensions are granted.

Supporters of the decision, on the other hand, maintain that governments are entitled to retain experienced administrators whose expertise is required for continuity in governance and implementation of key policies.

The issue is not unique to Tripura. The Central Government has also, on several occasions, defended the extension of service for senior bureaucrats, maintaining that it is "well within its right" to grant such extensions whenever administrative requirements justify the decision.

With Apurba Roy now receiving his ninth extension, the development is expected to further fuel discussions on the need for greater transparency and consistency in the implementation of the extension policy for retired government officers in Tripura.
