The Tripura Police have destroyed a massive quantity of seized narcotic substances worth nearly Rs.9 crore as part of the state's continuing anti-drug campaign. However, concerns continue to be raised in some quarters over the effectiveness of efforts to curb illegal Drugs supply chain and cannabis cultivation, with critics alleging that political interference often hampers action against those involved.

On June 29, 2026, the State Level Drug Disposal Committee (SLDDC) carried out the pre-trial destruction of psychotropic substances linked to 451 criminal cases at the Bodhjungnagar Industrial Area.

The disposal operation was conducted in the presence of Shri Manchak Ipper, IPS, Inspector General of Police (Law & Order) and Chairman of the SLDDC, along with Shri Nabadwip Jamatia, IPS, Superintendent of Police (Cyber Crime) and Smti. Piyamadhuri Majumdar, Superintendent of Police (Anti-Narcotics).

During the exercise, authorities destroyed:

10,932.23 kg of ganja

40,978 bottles of cough syrup

1,76,441 psychotropic tablets

1,889.57 grams of heroin

The total estimated market value of the destroyed narcotics was Rs.8,99,99,878 (approximately Rs.9 crore). Officials said the disposal was carried out strictly in accordance with prescribed legal procedures.

Despite these large-scale disposal operations, questions continue to be raised about the state's success in eliminating illegal cannabis cultivation. Critics allege that while police frequently publicize the destruction of seized narcotics, efforts to eradicate standing ganja plantations have yielded limited results.

Some allegations suggest that when police teams move to destroy illegal cannabis fields, they occasionally face violent resistance from local groups. Critics further claim that political pressure has, at times, discouraged strict legal action against those allegedly involved in attacks on police personnel.

The destruction of nearly Rs.9 crore worth of narcotics reflects the scale of law enforcement's seizure operations. However, observers note that sustained action against cultivation networks, traffickers, and those obstructing enforcement will remain crucial if the state is to achieve lasting success in its campaign against drug abuse and illicit narcotics trafficking.
