Amid the ongoing debate over the proposed restrictions on private practice by super-specialist doctors at AGMC and GBP Hospital, indications have emerged that the Tripura Government may soon announce a package of measures addressing several concerns raised by the medical fraternity.

A representation submitted by the Super Specialist Doctors Forum, AGMC & GBP Hospital, signed by doctors from departments including Cardiology, Neurology and Neurosurgery, has urged the Health Department to reconsider the proposed reforms. The doctors argued that the move was initiated without adequate consultation and stressed that reforms should be implemented only after addressing critical issues such as manpower shortages, inadequate infrastructure, ICU limitations, staff deficiencies, career progression and incentives.

In their memorandum, the doctors maintained that banning private practice alone would not improve healthcare delivery unless these long-standing systemic challenges are resolved. They appealed to the government to adopt a consultative approach rather than imposing a blanket restriction, emphasizing that they remain committed to public healthcare and patient welfare.

According to Health Department sources, the state government is taking the concerns of the doctors seriously and is working towards a constructive solution. The sources indicated that the government is planning to introduce a number of positive measures in line with several demands raised by the doctors. These proposals are expected to be finalized after consultations with representatives of the medical fraternity.

The sources further said that the government is keen to maintain a balance between strengthening public healthcare services and safeguarding the professional interests of doctors. An official announcement regarding the proposed measures is expected in the coming days following discussions between the government and doctors.

The development has raised hopes that the current differences can be resolved through dialogue, paving the way for reforms that enhance healthcare services while ensuring a supportive working environment for doctors serving in Tripura's premier government medical institutions.
