Two horrific incidents of alleged family killings reported within a span of 24 hours from different parts of Tripura have sent shockwaves across the state, once again drawing attention to the devastating consequences of alcohol abuse, domestic violence and unresolved family conflicts.

A gruesome incident unfolded at the Bru Settlement Camp in Ultachhara ADC Village under Gandatwisa (Gandacherra) subdivision of Dhalai district, where a father has been accused of brutally murdering his two minor children on Friday night.

According to police and local sources, the accused, Lalchuanawma Bru (34), allegedly became violent after consuming alcohol. Fearing for her life, his wife, Rontarung Reang (32), fled the house with one of their children. However, the accused allegedly attacked the two children who remained inside the house with a wooden stick, killing his daughter Rishika Khakhomati Reang (13) and his four-year-old son Prishammaiha Molsai Reang.

Local residents discovered the children's bodies on Saturday morning, overpowered the accused and informed Gandacherra Police. Police rushed to the spot, arrested the accused, and sent the bodies to Gandacherra Sub-Divisional Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Following a written complaint lodged by the victims' mother, police registered a case under Sections 103(1) and 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The accused remains in police custody while the investigation continues.

The brutal killings have left the Bru Settlement Camp and the entire Gandacherra subdivision in deep mourning, with residents demanding stronger child protection measures, addiction counselling and mental health support in vulnerable communities.

In another shocking incident, a man allegedly lost his life after being assaulted by his own son at North Rangamura under Sonamura subdivision in Sepahijala district.

According to police and local sources, the deceased has been identified as Ayakhi Ray Tripura, while the accused is his son, Samir Tripura.

Preliminary reports indicate that Samir was allegedly addicted to intoxicants and was frequently involved in quarrels and physical assaults on his father. During yet another altercation on Saturday, the accused allegedly struck his father with a wooden stick, causing fatal injuries.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident and initiated legal proceedings against the accused. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.

The two tragic incidents, occurring almost simultaneously in different districts, have reignited public concern over the increasing incidence of alcohol-related domestic violence and violent crime in Tripura. Social observers believe the back-to-back family tragedies underscore the urgent need for stronger de-addiction programmes, improved mental health services, community-based intervention, and more effective family counselling, particularly in vulnerable and economically disadvantaged areas.

The incidents have left families shattered and communities traumatised, while raising difficult questions about the effectiveness of existing mechanisms to prevent domestic violence and protect vulnerable family members from substance abuse-related crimes.
