Ramnagar Blast Raises Fresh Concerns Over Illegal Apartment Rentals and Public Safety in Agartala City

The recent explosion at Ramnagar in Agartala, which left one person with nearly 90 percent burn injuries, has once again raised serious questions over safety standards, illegal apartment rentals, and the increasing use of residential flats for unlawful activities. The incident comes as the second major explosion in the city after the Fire Brigade Chowmuhani blast last two year ago, the cause of which is yet to be conclusively established.

Initial reports indicate that this time explosion may have been caused by a TNGCL pipeline gas leak, though officials have stated that the exact cause will only be confirmed after the forensic investigation. The incident has renewed public concern over the rapid transformation of Ramnagar from a peaceful residential locality into a densely populated commercial and apartment zone.

Residents allege that a large number of apartments across Agartala, including Ramnagar, are being rented out without following mandatory police verification procedures. Under existing rules, landlords are required to submit the details of tenants to the local police station. However, locals claim that this requirement is often ignored, allowing unidentified individuals to occupy flats without proper verification.

There are also longstanding allegations that several apartments are being used for illegal activities. Intelligence inputs, according to local sources, have reportedly alerted the state government that some flats purchased in the city are not occupied by their owners but are instead rented out, allegedly to individuals involved in illegal businesses such as women and narcotics trafficking, land grabbing, illegally running SPA and contractor-related criminal networks. The growing number of apartment complexes has significantly altered the character of Ramnagar. Once known for its greenery, close-knit neighbourhoods, and peaceful atmosphere, the area now witnesses constant movement of construction machinery, commercial establishments, and unidentified visitors. Elderly residents and long-time inhabitants say the heavy influx of outsiders has affected the area's security and quality of life.

Residents and civil society members have urged the authorities to take immediate preventive measures, including:

Round-the-clock police surveillance in sensitive residential areas using plainclothes personnel.

Deployment of intelligence informers to identify suspicious activities.

Increased police patrolling and vehicle checking, particularly targeting suspicious movement and high-speed bikers.

Mandatory police verification of all tenants occupying apartments.

Strict action against illegal commercial activities operating from residential premises.

Many citizens believe that unless proactive measures are taken, similar incidents could occur again. They have called for stronger coordination between the police, municipal authorities, the Fire and Emergency Services, and regulatory agencies to restore public confidence and ensure that Agartala's residential neighbourhoods remain safe and secure.
