A powerful explosion inside a residential apartment complex in Tripura's capital Agartala on Thursday triggered panic among residents, injured several people and caused extensive damage to multiple flats, officials said.
The explosion occurred inside a flat at the NS Apartments in the Ramnagar area, which was reportedly being used as an office by a private organisation. The impact of the blast was felt across the building, damaging nearly a dozen neighbouring flats.
Windows, doors and other fixtures in several apartments were shattered due to the force of the explosion, residents said.
One person who was present inside the affected flat suffered severe burn injuries and was admitted to GB Pant Hospital for treatment. Several other residents sustained minor injuries from broken glass and debris.
Fire and emergency service personnel rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operations. The injured person was evacuated from the flat and shifted to hospital.
Officials have not yet determined the cause of the explosion. Initial speculation among local residents ranged from a possible gas leak to a cylinder-related incident, although authorities said no conclusion could be drawn until a detailed investigation is completed.
The incident has raised concerns over safety standards in multi-storey residential buildings and commercial establishments operating within apartment complexes.
Agartala Mayor and local MLA Dipak Majumder visited the site and said a thorough inquiry would be conducted to ascertain the cause of the explosion.
"The exact reason behind the explosion is yet to be established. The impact was severe enough to damage several adjoining flats. A detailed investigation will be carried out," he said.
Majumder also stressed the need to examine safety provisions in apartment buildings and said authorities would review whether adequate safeguards and emergency measures were in place.
Officials said forensic and technical examinations may be required to determine the exact cause of the blast.
Meanwhile, some residents have speculated that accumulation of combustible gases inside the flat may have contributed to the explosion. However, authorities emphasized that the cause can only be confirmed after the completion of the official investigation.
The incident revived memories of a similar explosion reported in Agartala several years ago, prompting renewed discussions on building safety and emergency preparedness in the rapidly growing urban areas of the Tripura capital.
