In a significant development for thousands of irregular government employees across Tripura, six long-serving workers of the Education Department have finally received offers for regularisation following a directive from the Supreme Court, ending a decades-long struggle for job security and recognition.

The employees, who had been working as irregular staff in Group-D positions, including as cooks, for nearly 30 years, had continued to discharge their duties without being granted regular government service status. Despite serving the department for decades, they remained outside the framework of permanent employment, depriving them of the benefits and security enjoyed by regular government employees.

Their prolonged legal battle culminated in a favourable outcome on April 2026 after intervention by the Supreme Court. The employees were represented and assisted by senior advocate Purushottam Roy Barman, whose efforts helped secure the long-awaited relief. Following the court's direction, the Education Department has today issued regularisation offers to the six workers.

Describing the judgment as a landmark victory, senior advocate Purushottam Roy Barman said that while justice may sometimes be delayed, it ultimately prevails through the rule of law. He noted that the Supreme Court's decision has opened a pathway for many other irregular employees who have been serving various government departments for years without regular appointments.

According to estimates, nearly 15,000 workers across different departments of the Tripura Government are currently employed in irregular or temporary capacities. Many of them have been working continuously for years, and in some cases decades, while awaiting regularisation. The latest verdict is expected to strengthen their claims and provide renewed hope for securing permanent employment status.

The development is being viewed as a major milestone in the ongoing struggle of irregular government employees in the state. Employee organizations and labour rights advocates have welcomed the decision, saying it reinforces the principle that long years of continuous public service should not go unrecognized.

The Supreme Court's intervention is likely to have far-reaching implications, potentially influencing similar cases involving irregular employees in various government departments. As the six workers prepare to begin a new chapter as regular government employees, thousands of others across Tripura are now looking to the judiciary and the administration for similar relief and recognition of their long years of service.
