In a landmark initiative aimed at ensuring safe, sustainable, and long-term drinking water security, the Tripura government has proposed a major water supply project that will utilize surface water from the Gomati River to provide potable water to Udaipur, Bishramganj, Bishalgarh, and Agartala city.

The proposal was discussed during a high-level review meeting on the proposed Tripura Water Grid project chaired by Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha. The meeting focused on reducing the state's dependence on groundwater and developing a modern, integrated water distribution system based on the utilization of Tripura's river resources.

According to officials, the state plans to harness surplus surface water from its rivers, with the Gomati River being identified as the primary source for the first phase of the ambitious project. The proposed network will transport treated water from the river to major population centres through an extensive pipeline and treatment infrastructure.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha emphasized that the project would be a game-changer for Tripura's drinking water sector. He noted that the state currently relies heavily on groundwater sources, many of which are affected by excessive iron content. The transition to surface water-based supply is expected to significantly improve water quality while ensuring a more reliable and sustainable source of drinking water for the growing population.

Officials informed the meeting that Agartala's existing water supply system presently draws a substantial portion of its water from groundwater-based treatment plants. The proposed Gomati River project is expected to gradually reduce pressure on underground aquifers and strengthen the capital city's long-term water security.

The initiative forms part of the broader Tripura Water Grid vision, under which the government intends to utilize surplus surface water from 12 rivers across the state. The project aims to create an interconnected water supply network capable of meeting the drinking water requirements of urban and rural areas alike.

Apart from improving access to safe drinking water, the project is expected to address longstanding concerns related to groundwater depletion and high iron concentrations, which have affected water quality in many parts of Tripura.
