A shocking case of alleged brutality against a woman in Golaghati under Takarjala Police Station in Tripura's Sepahijala district has sparked widespread outrage, with human rights activists, women's organizations, and local residents accusing the police of delaying action despite the seriousness of the allegations.
According to reports, the woman, who is currently undergoing treatment at GBP Hospital in Agartala, was allegedly subjected to severe physical assault by a group of individuals on the night of June 20. Family members and rights groups claim that the attackers forcibly dragged her from her residence to a nearby forest, where she was allegedly tortured in a manner described by activists as medieval barbarity. The victim reportedly sustained grievous injuries requiring emergency surgery at GBP Hospital.
The incident allegedly stemmed from accusations circulated against the woman on social media and claims relating to an alleged extramarital relationship. Rights activists have strongly condemned what they describe as an attempt by self-appointed community enforcers to take the law into their own hands.
Family members of the victim have accused Takarjala Police Station of delaying the registration of a formal case for several days despite repeated appeals. They further alleged that police officials initially failed to take the matter seriously, allowing the accused sufficient time to evade arrest. These allegations have intensified criticism of law enforcement's handling of the case.
Following growing public pressure and media attention, police reportedly visited the area under the leadership of the Jampuijala Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) and subsequently registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police also recorded the victim's statement while she was undergoing treatment at GBP Hospital.
The complaint names thirteen accused persons, including several women and men, all residents of South Golaghati Marakpara. The accused have been identified as Aruna Begum, Rahima Khatun, Rukiya Khatun, Anita Sutradhar, Monowara Khatun, Sofia Khatun, Parul Bibi, Suman Mia alias Titan Ali, Shahjahan Mia, Kamal Mia, Rukmat Ali, Dulal Mia, and Harlal Sutradhar.
According to the victim's statement, the assailants allegedly attacked her with the intention of causing fatal harm before dragging her to a nearby forest and continuing the assault. Her husband and relatives later rescued her and initially took her to Bishalgarh Sub-Divisional Hospital before she was referred to GBP Hospital due to the severity of her injuries.
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA), which described the alleged assault as an act of medieval barbarism. The organization has demanded a fair and impartial investigation, immediate arrest of all accused persons, and speedy prosecution under the law. AIDWA leaders stated that irrespective of any allegation against an individual, justice must be delivered through the legal system and not through mob violence.
A delegation of women activists and lawyers from the Tripura Human Rights Organization (THRO) also visited GBP Hospital and met the victim and her family members. THRO condemned the alleged assault and demanded immediate arrests, a transparent investigation, and strict punishment for all those involved.
Meanwhile, questions continue to be raised regarding the pace of the police investigation. Critics allege that despite the gravity of the allegations, no major arrests had been reported immediately after the case was registered. Local residents have expressed concern that some of the accused were allegedly moving freely in the area even after the incident became public.
Police officials have stated that all aspects of the complaint are being investigated and that medical records relating to the victim's treatment are being collected as part of the inquiry. The investigation has reportedly been entrusted to Sub-Inspector Subimal Debbarma of Takarjala Police Station.
The incident has triggered a broader debate on women's safety, access to justice, and the accountability of law enforcement agencies. Human rights groups and civil society organizations have called for urgent intervention to ensure that the victim receives justice and that such acts of alleged vigilante violence do not recur.
