A shocking murder in Kathaltali under Amtali Police Station in West Tripura has sparked widespread public outrage, violent protests, arson, and a major law-and-order challenge, prompting the district administration to impose prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.
The victim, Samir Das, a married youth and Secretary of Tarun Sangha Club, was allegedly hacked to death late Monday night. According to police and local sources, Samir Das had been involved in a long-standing personal dispute with local residents Swapan Sutradhar, popularly known as "Sappa", and another accused, Mithun (Apu) Sutradhar.
The incident occurred when Samir Das was returning home on his scooter late at night. Near the Kathaltali Shani Mandir, he was allegedly intercepted and attacked with sharp weapons. The assault proved fatal, and Samir died on the spot. The accused reportedly fled immediately after the attack.
Local residents discovered the blood-soaked body and raised an alarm, drawing family members and villagers to the scene. A team led by Amtali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Inspector Paritosh Das rushed to the spot with a large contingent of security personnel. Forensic experts and a dog squad were also deployed to collect evidence and assist the investigation.
Police recovered suspected murder weapons, including blood-stained sharp-edged weapons, from near the houses of the accused. The body was later sent to the Hapania Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
As news of the murder spread, tension escalated rapidly across Kathaltali and neighbouring areas. By Tuesday morning, angry residents gathered in large numbers demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment for those responsible. The protests soon turned violent, with enraged crowds attacking and vandalising the houses of the accused. One of the houses was reportedly set ablaze as hundreds of police personnel struggled to contain the situation.
Eyewitnesses claimed that despite a heavy police presence, portions of the accused's property were reduced to ashes amid the public fury. Police later evacuated the wives, children, and other family members of the accused from two houses and shifted them to safer locations to prevent harm. However, incidents of vandalism reportedly continued even after the evacuation.
The violence has sparked debate among residents and on social media. While there is widespread demand for the harshest punishment against the perpetrators, many citizens have appealed that innocent family members should not be targeted for crimes committed by others. Several local voices stressed that justice must be delivered through legal means and not through collective punishment.
In a major breakthrough, police arrested Swapan Sutradhar from the Indranagar area. The arrest was carried out by personnel of New Capital Complex Police Station. Another accused remains under investigation, and police teams are continuing search operations.
IGP (Law and order), Ipper Manchak Dnyanoba, IPS, West Tripura Superintendent of Police Namita Pathak, IPS visited Kathaltali and spoke to the media, assuring that all those involved in the murder would be brought to justice. They stated that the investigation is progressing rapidly and that no one found guilty would be spared. The IG warned of strict legal action not only against those responsible for the murder of Samir Das but also against individuals involved in arson, vandalism, and attempts to disturb public order.
The incident has attracted political attention as well. Senior CPI(M) leader condemned the murder and expressed concern over the deteriorating law-and-order situation in parts of the state.
To prevent further escalation, the District Magistrate and Collector of West Tripura imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of BNSS, 2023 throughout the jurisdiction of Amtali Police Station. The restrictions came into force at 6:00 PM on June 23, 2026, and will remain effective until 5:00 PM on June 25, 2026.
The administration stated that the order was necessary to maintain peace, prevent unlawful assembly, and avoid any retaliatory violence following the murder and subsequent mob attacks.
The Kathaltali incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over law and order, vigilantism, and rising tensions in the Surjyamaninagar constituency area. As police continue their investigation, authorities are urging residents to maintain calm and allow the justice system to take its course.
Cases related to the murder, arson, vandalism, and violation of prohibitory orders are expected to be pursued simultaneously as the administration seeks to restore normalcy in the troubled locality.
