A brutal murder in Kathaltali under Amtali Police Station on the outskirts of Agartala has triggered widespread outrage and tension across the area, with angry residents allegedly attacking the residence of one of the accused following the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Samir Das, a married youth, BJP worker, and Secretary of the Kathaltali Club. According to local sources, Samir had been involved in a long-standing dispute with local resident Swapan Sutradhar, popularly known as "Sappa."
As per preliminary reports, the incident occurred late on Monday night when Samir Das was returning home on his scooter. Near the Kathaltali Shani Mandir, he was allegedly intercepted by the accused. He was then attacked with sharp weapons in what police suspect to be a premeditated assault stemming from previous financial enmity.
Samir sustained severe injuries and reportedly died on the spot before any medical assistance could reach him. Following the attack, the main accused, Swapan Sutradhar, allegedly fled the area.
Family members of the deceased have claimed that threats against Samir had been ongoing for a considerable period. His sister alleged that Swapan had repeatedly attempted to harm her brother and that the murder was the culmination of a long-standing feud.
The killing sparked immediate anger among local residents. From Tuesday morning, large numbers of people gathered in Kathaltali demanding strict action against those responsible. The atmosphere became highly charged, and reports emerged of public fury being directed at the residence of one of the accused. Portions of the property were allegedly vandalized by an enraged crowd.
Police personnel from Amtali Police Station, along with several senior officers, rushed to the area to bring the situation under control and prevent any further escalation. Additional security forces were deployed as a precautionary measure.
Police sources said that one accused, Mithun Sutradhar, has been arrested in connection with the case, while another accused, Swapan Sutradhar, remains absconding. A massive search operation has been launched to trace and apprehend him.
The shocking murder has raised fresh concerns over law and order and violent rivalries in the area. Residents have demanded swift justice and stringent punishment for all those involved in the crime.
