A scheduled visit by Tripura Governor N Indrasena Reddy to PM SHRI Tepania Colony Higher Secondary School in Gomati district on Monday brought to light serious concerns regarding student attendance and the condition of the rural education system in the state.
Despite the visit being pre-announced and attended by senior government officials, including Gomati District Magistrate and Collector Rinku Lather, IAS, and School Education Department Director Asim Saha, the Governor reportedly found that nearly half of the students were absent from school.
The Governor, visibly concerned by the situation, questioned the school authorities about the reasons behind the low attendance. A teacher explained that many parents belong to economically weaker sections and often leave for work during the day, resulting in irregular attendance of their children. Unsatisfied with the explanation, the Governor directed the school authorities to produce the attendance register. After examining the records, he confirmed that a substantial number of students were absent on the day of his visit.
The Governor further inquired whether the school had been informed in advance about his inspection. When the teachers confirmed that prior information had indeed been provided, he expressed surprise and dissatisfaction, observing that student attendance should have been significantly higher on such an occasion. School authorities later stated that some students had gone to participate in a nearby School community hall for his reception programme. It was subsequently reported that several girl students had been taken to perform songs at another event in the School premises.
The incident unfolded in the presence of the District Magistrate and senior education officials, raising questions about monitoring, accountability, and the effectiveness of efforts to ensure regular attendance in government schools. Education observers believe the episode has highlighted deeper challenges facing rural education, including absenteeism, socio-economic barriers, parental awareness and administrative oversight. The fact that such a situation occurred during a pre-scheduled gubernatorial visit has intensified concerns about the actual attendance levels on regular school days.
Notably, the Governor's visit to PM SHRI Tepania Colony Higher Secondary School was part of a broader tour of institutions in Gomati district on June 22. During the day, he also visited Alor Dishari Children Home at Amtali Kakraban and Khilpara Children Home at RK Pur, Udaipur, as part of his review of educational and child welfare institutions in the district.
The developments at the school have sparked fresh debate over the state of education in Tripura's rural areas. Many observers noted that despite the presence of the District Magistrate and the Education Department's top district officials, the Governor himself witnessed firsthand the challenges confronting the education sector. The episode is expected to draw the attention of policymakers and education administrators as the state continues its efforts to improve learning outcomes, strengthen school monitoring mechanisms and ensure better student attendance across rural Tripura.
