Senior Congress leader, MLA, and former minister Sudip Roy Barman has raised serious questions over what he described as the alleged misuse of law enforcement to silence voices speaking against corruption in Tripura.

Addressing the media after visiting the residence of Content creator and social activist Prasenjit Saha, Roy Barman asked whether people who expose corruption in government institutions would now be "framed in false cases and sent to jail" in the state.

According to Congress leaders and local residents, Prasenjit Saha had been actively raising allegations of irregularities and corruption in the functioning of the Melaghar Municipal Council. They claimed that Saha had also filed a complaint before the Lokayukta seeking an investigation into various alleged corrupt practices linked to the civic body.

Congress leaders alleged that just before the scheduled proceedings and questioning related to the Lokayukta case, Saha was implicated in a narcotics-related case. They claimed that cannabis was allegedly planted in his vehicle as part of a pre-planned conspiracy to prevent him from pursuing the corruption allegations.

Local residents supporting Saha described the incident as a “politically motivated conspiracy” and a “staged drama” aimed at intimidating activists and whistleblowers. They further alleged that the timing of the case raised serious questions and demanded an impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

The controversy has also brought the spotlight on the leadership of the Melaghar Municipal Council, with Congress leaders alleging that the civic body's chairman should be investigated over the alleged conspiracy. However, no official response from the municipal authorities regarding these allegations was immediately available.

During the visit, Sudip Roy Barman was accompanied by several district Congress leaders who met Saha’s family members and expressed solidarity with them. The delegation assured that the party would continue to raise the issue both politically and legally until a fair and transparent investigation is conducted.

The incident has triggered fresh political debate in Tripura, with the opposition accusing the government of targeting critics and anti-corruption activists, while demanding an independent probe into the allegations. Authorities are yet to issue a detailed statement on the claims made by Congress leaders and local residents.

This report is based on allegations and statements made by Congress leaders and local residents.
