Veteran tribal leader and senior CPI(M) politician and former MLA Niraj Tripura passed away late Saturday night at the age of 99, bringing to an end a remarkable political and social journey that spanned several decades. He breathed his last at around 11:26 PM after battling age-related ailments and had been bedridden for some time.
The demise of Nirajay Tripura has cast a deep shadow of grief among CPIM circles across Tripura, particularly among tribal communities and left-wing supporters who regarded him as one of the most dedicated grassroots leaders of the state. Soon after the news of his death spread, political leaders, social organizations, and well-wishers expressed their condolences and paid tribute to his lifelong service to the people.
Reacting to his death, CPI(M) Tripura State Committee Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury described Nirajay Tripura as “a true son of the soil whose entire life was devoted to struggle and the welfare of ordinary people.” He said Nirajay Tripura remained committed to the rights of marginalized communities and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of tribal people. As a mark of respect, the CPI(M) decided to keep party flags at half-mast at all state offices on Sunday.
Born on July 12, 1928, in a village that now falls within Bangladesh, Nirajay Tripura migrated to Tripura with his family after Partition and eventually settled in the state. Despite facing severe economic hardship during his early years, he remained determined to uplift society and dedicated himself to public service.
His political journey began in 1964 when he joined the Communist movement. He soon emerged as a prominent tribal leader and became actively involved in movements for land rights, social justice, and the welfare of indigenous communities. During the turbulent years of political and social transformation in Tripura, he played a crucial role in mobilizing people and strengthening grassroots democratic movements.
Nirajay Tripura was elected as a Member of the Tripura Legislative
Assembly from Chowmanu Assembly counsituency in 2008 and 2013. Throughout his tenure, he earned a reputation for simplicity, honesty, and unwavering commitment to the people.
