Alleged Attack on Woman’s House Over Extramarital Relationship Sparks Tension in Agartala’s Badharghat

A major controversy erupted in the Badharghat area of Agartala after a divorced woman of state health department alleged that their residence was attacked and vandalized by a group of people in the presence of police personnel last night, reportedly over an alleged extramarital relationship involving two employees of the State Health Department.
The incident took place in the Ram Thakur College Road area under Amtali Police Station jurisdiction and has triggered widespread discussion and tension in the locality. Several people were reportedly injured during the violence, while substantial damage was allegedly caused to household property, vehicles and other belongings including CC cameras.
According to allegations made by injured woman Kaberi Sinha, around 40 to 45 individuals allegedly associated with a local BJP Mandal entered her residence near Badharghat Stadium on Friday night at 8-9 pm. Kaberi Sinha, a Health Department employee, is alleged to have been in a relationship with Partha Chowdhury, another employee of the same department. The alleged relationship had reportedly been the subject of complaints by Chowdhury’s wife at multiple police stations including Agartala Women Police Station and Amtali Police Station in the past. Sources said attempts had earlier been made to resolve the dispute through mediation, and both individuals were reportedly transferred to different workplaces in an effort to defuse the situation.
According to the allegations, Partha Chowdhury had visited Kaberi Sinha’s residence on Friday night. Following a complaint by his wife, police personnel reportedly arrived at the house accompanied by local political activists. Kaberi Sinha claimed she was not at home at the time and was attending her daughter’s private tuition classes. She alleged that she was called back to the residence through a phone call made from Partha Chowdhury’s mobile phone.
Upon her return, Kaberi Sinha alleged that a group of people first assaulted Partha Chowdhury over the alleged relationship. When she and her elderly mother attempted to intervene, they too were allegedly attacked. Family members who rushed to the spot after being informed of the incident also reportedly came under attack.
The Kaberi Sinha further alleged that despite the presence of police personnel, no effective steps were taken to prevent the violence or protect the occupants of the house. Serious allegations have also been levelled against a woman police officer, identified as Susmita Debnath. The family claimed that after some members had taken shelter inside a room for safety, the officer allegedly facilitated a second entry by the attackers, leading to further assaults. These allegations have not yet been independently verified.
According to the complainants, at least four to five persons, including Partha Chowdhury, members of Kaberi Sinha’s family and relatives, sustained injuries in the incident. The injured were reportedly taken to hospital for treatment.
The family has also alleged extensive damage to property during the attack. They claimed that vehicles, including a car and motorcycles, CCTV equipment, household furniture and other valuables were vandalized. The financial loss has not yet been officially assessed.
Local residents reported heightened tension in the area following the incident. Additional police personnel from Arundhatinagar Police Station were reportedly deployed to prevent any further deterioration of law and order.
The allegations have also acquired a political dimension, with claims and counterclaims emerging regarding the involvement of local BJP functionaries. Some reports suggested that the violence stemmed from an internal dispute involving BJP supporters, although no official statement has been issued by party leaders regarding the allegations.
Police authorities have not yet released a detailed official version of the incident, and no confirmation has been received regarding the allegations of assault, vandalism or police inaction. An investigation is expected to determine the circumstances leading to the violence and establish responsibility for any unlawful acts committed during the episode.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the handling of personal disputes, allegations of vigilantism, and the role of law enforcement agencies in maintaining public order during sensitive domestic and family-related conflicts.
