Left supporters protests outside head post office over use of postal channels transporting narcotic substances

The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and other student and youth organisations on Friday staged a demonstration outside the General Post Office (GPO) in Agartala, demanding a thorough investigation into the alleged use of postal channels for transporting narcotic substances.The protest followed two recent seizures of consignments containing banned cough syrup from the head post office, raising concerns over possible misuse of the postal network.
Addressing the gathering, DYFI leaders questioned how prohibited substances could be routed through a government-run system despite existing verification procedures. They urged authorities to identify all persons involved in the movement of such consignments and take legal action after a detailed inquiry.The youth organisation also criticised the state government's anti-drug campaign, alleging that narcotics trafficking continued to persist despite repeated claims of a strict crackdown on the menace.Meanwhile, police seized 749 bottles of banned cough syrup during a raid at a rented apartment in the Shibnagar area of Agartala on Thursday night.
According to Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Sadar) D.P. Roy, the operation was carried out on the basis of specific intelligence inputs. During the search, officers recovered the contraband and arrested a woman identified as Sariya Reang.
Police said the accused had been living in the rented accommodation along with her husband, Litan Debbarma. The apartment belongs to a local resident, Krishanu Deb.Investigators are now trying to determine the source of the seized cough syrup and its intended destination. Officials said further investigation is underway to ascertain whether the seizure is linked to a larger network involved in the illegal trade of narcotic substances.The latest recovery comes amid a series of anti-narcotics operations across the state and follows recent seizures of banned cough syrup consignments at the Agartala head post office.
