BJP replaces district unit chiefs in Khowai, Sepahijala

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday announced key changes in its district-level leadership as part of an ongoing organisational overhaul under newly appointed state president Abhishek Debroy.
Prasenjit Ghosh has been appointed president of the party's Sepahijala South organisational district, replacing Uttam Das. Previously, Ghosh served as a district secretary and has been actively involved in strengthening the party structure at the grassroots level.
In another important change, Samir Das has taken charge as the BJP's Khowai district president, succeeding Binay Debbarma.
Political observers view the appointments as part of a broader strategy to reinforce the party's organisational network ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections. The reshuffle comes at a time when the BJP is preparing for a comprehensive restructuring exercise across the state.
Khowai remains a politically significant district for the ruling party. While the BJP has secured victories in constituencies such as Kamalpur, Teliamura and Krishnapur in recent elections, the Khowai Assembly seat has continued to elude the party. Several tribal-majority constituencies in the district remain areas of influence for ally Tipra Motha.
In contrast, the BJP has steadily expanded its presence in Sepahijala South over the past few years. The party registered comfortable wins in Nalchar and Dhanpur during the 2023 Assembly elections. Although the CPI(M) retained Sonamura and Boxanagar at that time, the BJP later wrested Boxanagar in a by-election held following the death of CPI(M) legislator Samsul Haque.
Sources within the BJP indicated that the latest appointments are aimed at bringing forward leaders with wider organisational acceptability and strengthening the party machinery at the district level. Party insiders said the leadership changes mark the beginning of a larger restructuring process intended to build a stronger electoral organisation well before the next Assembly polls.
