In a significant development for the tribal areas of Tripura, the Tripura State Election Commission (SEC) has informed the Hon’ble Supreme Court that elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Village Committees will be conducted starting from the first week of September 2026.

According to an affidavit submitted before the Supreme Court, the State Election Commission has proposed a detailed election schedule under which the electoral process will begin in early September and conclude by the first week of October 2026.

As per the tentative schedule placed before the court, the nomination process is expected to commence on September 1, 2026, followed by scrutiny and withdrawal of nominations between September 9 and 11. Campaigning will continue until September 26, while polling is tentatively scheduled for September 27, 2026. In the event of a repoll, provisions have been made until October 1, with counting likely to take place by October 3. The entire election process is expected to be completed through official notification by October 5, 2026.

Following today's hearing in the Supreme Court in New Delhi, Tipra Motha founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma termed the development a "huge victory" for his party and for the people of Tripura.

Speaking after the hearing, Debbarma said that the State Election Commission’s commitment before the Supreme Court represents a major breakthrough in the long-pending demand for democratic representation at the grassroots level in the TTAADC areas. He described the announcement as both a huge relief and a victory for the indigenous people and residents of the state.

The proposed elections carry special significance as TTAADC Village Committee elections have not been held for nearly a decade. Notably, since the BJP came to power in Tripura in 2018, no Village Committee elections have been conducted in the TTAADC areas. The prolonged delay had become a major political and constitutional issue, prompting legal intervention and repeated demands from tribal organizations and political parties.

The Supreme Court's ongoing monitoring of the matter is being viewed as a crucial factor in ensuring that the long-pending local body elections are finally conducted. If the schedule is implemented as proposed, thousands of voters across the TTAADC areas will get an opportunity to elect their grassroots representatives after almost ten years.

Political observers believe the upcoming Village Committee elections will be closely watched, as they are expected to have a significant impact on the political landscape of Tripura's tribal regions and will serve as an important test for major political parties operating in the state.

The matter remains under the consideration of the Hon’ble Supreme Court, with further developments expected in the coming months as preparations for the elections move forward.
