The mysterious death of 24-year-old Manisha Das, an employee of Tripura Santiniketan Medical College, has triggered widespread public concern and intensified political pressure, with Opposition Leader Jitendra Chaudhury demanding a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and a judicial inquiry to ensure a transparent and impartial investigation.

After meeting the bereaved family, Chaudhury stated that the real mystery behind Manisha’s death must be uncovered and the guilty must be brought to justice.

In a press conference he alleged that several unanswered questions remain regarding the circumstances surrounding the young woman's death and urged the state government to constitute an SIT headed by senior officers or order a judicial probe under a sitting judge.

Manisha Das was found hanging inside a locked room of the women’s hostel at Tripura Santiniketan Medical College in Madhuban on the night of June 10. While the police initially suspected suicide, her family has strongly rejected that theory and alleged foul play.

According to family members, Manisha had been under tremendous work pressure and was frequently required to stay on campus. They have raised concerns over possible institutional lapses and have demanded a thorough investigation into all angles of the case, including allegations circulating in the public domain regarding possible sexual assault and murder.

Responding to the growing controversy, Chief Minister Professor (Dr) Manik Saha ordered an official magisterial inquiry into the incident. West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar, IAS has been entrusted with conducting the probe and submitting a detailed report to the Home Department.

A forensic team and dog squad have already examined the scene, while the victim’s body was sent to GB Hospital for post-mortem examination. Authorities say the final forensic and autopsy reports will play a crucial role in determining the exact cause of death.

Police have arrested Manisha’s alleged boyfriend, Prasenjit Sarkar, on charges related to abetment of suicide. Investigators reportedly found evidence of a heated phone conversation between the two shortly before the incident. However, the arrest has not satisfied the victim’s family or opposition parties, who insist that the investigation must go beyond the suicide angle.

The CPI(M) has strongly criticized the handling of the case and questioned whether all possible angles are being investigated. Party leaders have demanded a neutral and high-level inquiry, arguing that public confidence can only be restored through an independent probe.

The party also urged the government to provide financial and legal assistance to the victim’s family and ensure that no evidence is suppressed.
